Bald Head Island Salvage

Work completed
Overview
Fathom Marine Logistics (FML) was engaged to provide emergency response, salvage, and wreck removal services after a 25’ Sea Fox vessel ran aground at high speed on Bald Head Island. The incident required immediate medical response, coordination with multiple agencies, and a complex multi-day salvage operation to recover the vessel while protecting the sensitive dune and beach ecosystem.
Incident Response
On July 21, 2025, FML Captain Evan Schollaert witnessed the vessel’s impact at approximately 30 knots. He immediately alerted the U.S. Coast Guard, rendered aid to the injured operator, and secured the scene. With input from Captains Chris Parker and Winslow Taylor, FML developed a salvage plan in coordination with Bald Head Island officials, the USCG, and NC Wildlife Commission.
Salvage Operations
July 22–23: FML mobilized specialized equipment, including a Safeboat, Kubota excavator, and side-by-side utility vehicle, transported via contractor ferry.
NC Wildlife conducted an on-site investigation before salvage began.
The vessel was carefully repositioned, pulled over dunes, and relaunched into the water using the excavator and towboat.
The Sea Fox was towed safely to Morningstar Marina, then transported to FML’s impound facility in Southport.
Crews restored the impacted dune area and removed all salvage equipment.
Equipment & Capabilities
FML deployed over $1 million in dedicated marine response assets, including three response vessels, salvage trailers, HAZMAT-certified personnel, and Coast Guard–licensed captains. All operations were conducted with full attention to environmental protection and public safety.
Outcome
The vessel was successfully removed without further incident or environmental damage. FML provided full demobilization, equipment cleaning, and preventive maintenance following the operation.
